Sustainable Bolivia is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the Bolivian Amazon around the city of Riberalta that partners with local initiatives to provides resources that support ecotourism, health and education. Volunteers and interns are placed with partner NGOs throughout the country, namely in and around Riberalta, Bolivia.
By working with the municipal government and local communities, SB helped to establish a reserve of more than 20,000 in the Bolivian Amazon in 2016. To support conservation efforts and provide a sustainable income, SB is working inside the Aquicuana reserve to promote local ecotourism projects. Proposed initiatives include guided nature hikes, plant medicine, canoe rides, bird watching and fishing.
As such, we are looking for a student or professional passionate about biodiversity and biology in order to study animals in the Reserve, list them based on lists and pictures we already have, and suggest observation projects (which type of animal, where in the reserve, which season). For this opportunity you will be able to be in contact punctually with a local biologist with 20 years of experience in the region. However, this local researcher helps Sustainable Bolivia on a volunteer and sporadic basis he can’t act as a tutor. You will be under the responsability of SB’s National Director.
Responsibilities may include:
- Looking for specific animals in the reserve going on current trails or going off track
- Make a list of these animals with full name, description and picture
- Prepare field guides
- Write blog articles on the work and current species in the reserve
- Possibly write or co-write scientific articles
- Create possible observation projects
- Create content: photographs, blog articles, videos
- Take initiative and suggest ideas to further develop the eco-tourism project
- Create promotion activities around fauna and flora to local institutions (schools, orphanages, etc.)
Qualifications:
- Biology or biodiversity degree (or currently studying)
- Interest for wildlife and plants in the rainforest
- Ability to work independently
- Knowledge of online platforms for the identification of species
